🤖 Google DeepMind enables Robots to Understand Language and Perform Novel Tasks (Link)

Google DeepMind unveiled a new AI system called RT-2 that allows robots to perform novel tasks they weren't specifically trained for.
RT-2 was trained on large datasets of text and images from the internet, enabling it to understand language and visual input.
Unlike traditional robots limited to simple programmed tasks, RT-2 can adapt to new situations, learn from diverse data, and handle unfamiliar tasks.
In testing, RT-2 matched performance on trained tasks and nearly doubled performance on new unseen tasks compared to prior models.
RT-2 combines two DeepMind models - PaLI-X for visual processing and PaLM-E for language understanding - to generate appropriate actions.
With RT-2, robots can carry out complex real-world tasks by understanding instructions and visual surroundings.
RT-2 shows promise for more capable general-purpose robots, though some may be concerned about resembling sci-fi robot uprisings.

💼 Generative AI and the future of work in America

The McKinsey Global Institute has released a special report on AI and automation and how it will profoundly transform the labor market over the next decade, requiring major transitions for workers.

While generative AI could automate many jobs, it may also boost productivity and create new opportunities. But low-wage roles are most exposed, and up to 36 million Americans may need to switch occupations by 2030, requiring substantial retraining programs and support. Although higher-wage jobs are safer, no occupation is fully immune. Realizing the full economic benefits of AI depends on accelerating development responsibly while implementing policies to aid impacted workers.

Overall, generative AI brings immense potential but also risks—proactive measures are essential to maximize gains.

💪 How Nvidia is Exerting Its Influence Over the AI Industry

Nvidia, the major supplier of graphics chips used for AI, is taking unusual steps like allocating chips to small cloud providers instead of big players and requesting customer names from providers, to assert its dominance in the AI chip market.

By knowing end users of its chips, Nvidia gains valuable insights into AI demand, enabling it to manage supply and demand and potentially favor certain startups. With GPUs in high demand but short supply, this move could further strengthen Nvidia's leadership position in the rapidly growing AI industry, though it raises concerns about exploiting customer data.
