AV Investments are Back.Autonomous vehicles (AVs) are increasingly transforming the supply chain, with startups in the sector receiving $2.9 billion in Q2 2024, the highest since Q3 2021. Beyond passenger cars, AVs are tackling critical challenges in commercial transportation, particularly in supply-chain yard operations. I personally have tried Waymo and I am impressed by their performance and as any tech advancements move in waves, we will see ups and down in this space, but there will always be progress as AI and connectivity continue to advance. Outrider, a Colorado-based startup, focuses on automating the movement of heavy trailers in yard environments, an industry worth $60 billion annually. Their electric AVs make 6-12 trips per hour, moving up to 60,000 pounds per trip. Other companies like Pyka (autonomous cargo planes) and Gatik, focus on cargo planes and local goods distribution, respectively. While concerns around AVs replacing human jobs persist, proponents argue that automation will redirect human labor to safer and more meaningful tasks. It’s all About the AI Chips.Global Shifts and Key Developments. ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, is developing a new AI model using Huawei’s Ascend 910B chips due to U.S. restrictions on Nvidia chips. However, chip shortages are delaying progress. Meanwhile, Nvidia faces challenges in China, as regulators are urging local companies to avoid buying its H20 chips, boosting domestic competitors like Huawei. On the design front, Google’s AlphaChip is revolutionizing chip layouts, significantly speeding up the process. Basically using AI to design AI Chips. Used in Google’s AI accelerators, AlphaChip has inspired industry-wide research and adoption. In the U.S., Intel is securing $8.5 billion in government funding to boost domestic chip production and regain its competitive edge against rivals like Nvidia and AMD. Our Partners:
