This makes us think of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman who has been advocating for global AI regulation during his recent world tour. However, leaked documents obtained by TIME reveal that OpenAI has been lobbying to weaken certain aspects of the European Union's (EU) AI Act, which is considered the most comprehensive AI legislation in the world.
OpenAI, along with Microsoft and Google, argued against classifying their general-purpose AI systems as "high risk," which would subject them to stricter regulations. OpenAI's lobbying efforts appear to have been successful, as the final draft of the AI Act approved by the European Parliament did not consider general-purpose AI systems as inherently high risk. OpenAI's engagement with EU officials and its push for looser regulations have raised concerns about the company's financial interests conflicting with the goal of robust regulation. The leaked documents and OpenAI's lobbying efforts highlight the tension between AI companies' desire for innovation and profitability and the need for robust regulations to address the potential risks and societal impacts of AI technology.
