A great research report released by the Rand Corporation shares the pros and cons of the AI-based tools that are being implemented by U.S. schools to identify students at risk of suicide and self-harm. In response to the alarming 70% increase in youth suicide rates between 2009 and 2019 (Suicide was the second leading cause of death in 2021 for people ages 10-14), particularly exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, these tools, which emerged during the transition to remote education, offer potential benefits but raise concerns about privacy, equity, and the perpetuation of existing inequalities. The effectiveness of these AI algorithms in accurately detecting suicide risk and improving student mental health remains uncertain. Additionally, schools often lack the resources to adequately address mental health challenges, even with AI support.
